Opportunities

CRC student group work

For over a decade, the CRC-VT Education Program has offered students a host of opportunities to develop professionally and build on their existing repertoire of skills with the aims of enhancing the research experience and highlighting the range of employment options after graduation. As the Centre draws towards completion in June 2006, some of these opportunities will not be available beyond June 2005.

Visits to other laboratories
The Education Advisory Committee encourages and supports students to spend time at other laboratories within the Centre to learn techniques or gain understanding of specific value to a project.

Conference Travel Support
All CRC-VT members are eligible to apply for travel support to attend international conferences and present their work. Several PhD students seeking future overseas postdoctoral experience have found this extremely valuable for combining with visits to potential employer laboratories.

Courses for Centre Students and Staff
A variety of courses have been offered through the Education Program. Topics have included commercialisation, intellectual property, media skills, communication, leadership and professional development. Other aspects of the CRC-VT Education Program include sponsorship of scientific societies, links with other CRC Education Programs, public lectures, Open Days and special events like the Genetech Festival (Melbourne) and National Science Week.

Project Management Teams
Students may have the opportunity to work with a Project Management Team (PMT), and gain valuable career experience.

Annual Conference
The CRC-VT holds an Annual Scientific Conference for staff and students of the Centre, providing opportunities for collaboration, project development and review.

Sabbatical Program
CRC-VT students are eligible to work for two to three months at one of the Centre's industry nodes on sabbatical. This valuable opportunity introduces students to the commercial environment and highlights the differences between research and business-oriented thinking. A range of uniquely designed, pre-packaged projects are available and the option to discuss variations on project areas. This program has proven to be highly successful but will no longer be available after June 2005.
